Releaf Paper

Releaf is envisioned as a company writing the future of paper. Invasive plants have taken over 100,000,000 acres of land in the United States. They spread to 3 million acres each year, and 42% of federally-listed threatened and endangered species have been affected by the spread of invasive plants. A majority of these plants were introduced for ornamental or landscaping purposes. Kudzu, for instance, is an invasive species of vine found throughout the United States which has been responsible for catastrophic damage to the environment. Over $36.6 billion is spent annually to curb invasive plants. Purple Loosestrife alone accounts for over $45 million of this amount.

Furthermore, 33–40% of all wood is used to make paper. This use can lead to deforestation, exacerbating climate change and ecological damage. The paper manufacturing process itself can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and chemical pollution, contaminating the air, water, and soil.

Releaf produces universal paper products that are not only high-quality but sourced from nature. The idea of stationery is less ubiquitous today due to the rapid spread of technology, yet people still use products such as paper and notebooks at increasing rates. Using real stationery feels special, and through its design style, Releaf aims to reaffirm this feeling and combine it with the appeal of an environmentally-conscious choice with a long-term positive impact.

A logo, color and type specifications, product designs, and advertising were created. Additionally, a curated art exhibition on the theme of “Perspectives on Paper” is proposed as an activation event for the brand. Focusing on abstract, brightly-colored woven paper designs from contemporary artists, the exhibition promotes the versatility of Releaf paper as a medium for art and highlights its materiality. Each piece conveys a thought on nature and Releaf’s mission to protect it.

Releaf Paper was a collaboration between Jacob Wollock, Reid Brenner, Jiayi Li, and Paul Vorbeck.
